7 Free (and Inexpensive) Self Care Ideas

The act of prioritizing yourself, taking care of yourself, showing yourself the same love, attention, and, well, care, is critical for yourself and the people who rely on you. It’s the everyday version of putting on your oxygen mask before helping others: if you aren’t maintaining your own strength, how can anyone rely on you?

Self care may be a gimmicky term, but it is also the difference between thriving and collapse. Trust me, I’ve been there. I’m going through it now. Literally.

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking “oh please. I’m fine. I don’t need this self care nonsense, and I don’t have the time or money to waste on it, either”.

You’re not alone. And, if you’re like me, and have been having a hard time, but you can’t quite put your finger on why, then you can’t afford not to.

These are some of the best self care activities I’ve found that are free or inexpensive, and are easy to start incorporating into your routine right now.

Whether you’re a new parent, a parent of a young child, the primary caretaker of any kind in your household, or just overwhelmed with life lately, these self care ideas are worth keeping in your back pocket.

But this is just my list. I’d love to hear some of the small, but meaningful, things that you do to energize, relax, and care for yourself each day.

THE LIST: 7 LOW COST AND NO COST SELF CARE IDEAS

SELF CARE IDEA #1: TAKE A SHOWER

Any mom with young kids will tell you that, with all the demands on your time each day, a shower feels like an unattainable luxury. But, for me, it makes all the difference to face the day feeling cleaned up and reasonably presentable – even if it means waking up 15 minutes earlier, and not washing my hair. In addition to feeling good when you look good, a shower is one of the few places you can escape all the screens, be alone (assuming you have either no children, or a partner willing to distract them for a few minutes), breathe, and think.

Cost: notwithstanding your water bill, free. 

SELF CARE IDEA #2: MAKE A PHONE CALL

Sometimes all it takes to put things in perspective or turn your day around is to connect with someone. Call a good friend from the car, or a family member on your lunch break. I’ve found that when I’m feeling stressed, even a 15-minute conversation with someone who makes me smile can completely turn your day around.

Cost: assuming unlimited minutes on your cell phone, free. 

SELF CARE IDEA #3: ORDER YOUR GROCERIES

Having 30 hours of things to do in a 24-hour day is almost always the cause of my stress. I don’t want to eat out all the time (nor is that healthy, appetizing, or cost-effective), but going to the store is a major undertaking when you need just about everything. Paying someone to do my grocery shopping and deliver my food to my front door may seem frivolous and unbelievably luxurious, but when my whole day is packed with responsibilities, this is one area where I can pay a few dollars to free up at least a couple of hours of time for relaxation and mental health.

SELF CARE IDEA #4: PRACTICE GUIDED MEDITATION/MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is just a fancy word for practicing the act of focusing on the present. When I’m stressed, it’s because I am juggling too much and worrying about all the things that I have coming up. Mindfulness teaches you how to put on mental blinders and focus on what’s in front of you. It’s definitely a work in progress for me, but apps like Headspace and Calm, which offer guided meditation and deep breathing modules on your phone, help a lot.

Cost: you can find guided meditation practices free on YouTube and, possibly, the iTunes store.

SELF CARE IDEA #5: READ A MAGAZINE

I used to read books before bed. Heavy books, which – understandably, I think – would get my mind racing and spark thoughts and conversation. Not really the pre-lights-out wind down I needed in order to sleep well. I recently switched to reading magazines which, by their nature, are mostly intended to be light, disposable reading. I’ve found that light, fun, analogue entertainment before bed (or anytime) calms my mind.

SELF CARE IDEA #6: MOVE YOUR BODY

When I was younger and single, it was so easy, but now I don’t have the time or energy to cram my already-overfull day with an additional obligation to go to the gym. Instead of being something I look forward to, that gym obligation now adds to my stress.

Instead, I focus more on a phrase I learned from Kylie, who calls it “moving her body”. Just getting out of your chair, getting outside if possible (not possible lately), and getting my blood moving with a brisk walk or even cleaning up the kitchen. Anything that gently and organically moves my muscles seems to release tension in a way that hard core, structured exercise (usually) does not for me, lately.

SELF CARE IDEA #7: WASTE TIME

Time is such a luxury, and for people who are busy, overwhelmed, and stressed, it can be easy to fall into the productivity trap. But there is so much value to just doing … nothing. Productive time wasting suggestions:

Binge watch Netflix or silly YouTube videos (without also checking emails and social media on your phone, or working on your laptop)

Take a quick nap or a hot bath. For extra luxury, make it a bubble bath scented with essential oils!

The point is that, sometimes, all you have to do to clear your mind is to focus on what’s in front of you right now. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much putting down your to do list and making time to just do nothing benefits your mental health.

Hi everyone. As a reintroduction, my name’s Samantha and I’m the owner of Beauty Queen Bar

Most of you wouldn’t be aware that I suffer from mental health issues – Depression, anxiety, social anxiety and PTSD. Self care is a journey I have just set upon in the last 12 months and I wanted to share this with you.

Self-care describes the actions you implement take  to reach your personal, optimal, physical and mental health. Mental health professionals often use the term self-care to refer to one’s ability to take care of the activities of daily living, such as eating regularly, showering, brushing your hair, wearing clean clothes, and attending to medical concerns. Physical self-care, such as sleep and exercise, is also a activity of daily living.

Self-care can also refer to activities that an individual engages in to relax and attain emotional well-being, such as meditating, journaling, or visiting a counselor.

Extended failure to care for yourself can result in illness or hospitalization. Men and women, even children who find it difficult or are struggling to take care of their own needs may find it helpful to speak to a therapist.

UNDERSTANDING SELF-CARE
Self-care can include activities such as getting a haircut or massage, taking a walk or eating your favorite healthy food, as well as attending to one’s basic daily needs. People who experience difficulty with self-care for several reasons:

Depression can sometimes inspire a lack of care for one’s condition: a loss of appetite or motivation, a lack of energy, or a sense of self-loathing. All of these can impair the ability to care for one’s self.

Survivors of abuse or violence may find it challenging to maintain good self-care habits.
Cognitive declines associated with dementia can impair self-care skills.

Psychosis, a split from reality that may include hallucinations or delusions, can often have an affect on one’s ability to care for oneself.

If you’re experiencing any or all of the above, please engage with your G.P to discuss a mental health plan.

People all have different requirements for self-care, but in general, the goals of self-care are to find a state of good mental and physical health, reduce stress, meet emotional needs, maintain relationships, both romantic and platonic, and find a balance between your personal and academic or professional life.

Self-care, is by no means a selfish act. I practice it daily and encourage everyone to do the same. It’s imperative xx

People who do not take care of their own emotional and physical needs before attempting to resolve those of others may begin to experience a decline in their own emotional or physical state.

People who care for others, either professionally or in your personal life, may find themselves especially drained if they do not devote enough time to self-care. Once they have met their own needs, they may often find themselves better able to assist others in meeting their needs.

Taking care of the emotional self by managing anxiety, anger, sadness, and other feelings is also an important aspect of self-care. This type of self-care can often be accomplished by setting boundaries with people, especially those people who are not positive or supportive and may have a negative effect on one’s mental state. Again I highly recommend seeing your doctor if this are overwhelming.

Good, healthy relationships can help an individual maintain a positive frame of mind, but friends who only want to fulfill their own needs or family members who leave an individual feeling exhausted or depressed will likely not help an individual’s mental or emotional state to improve. Someone who has trouble meeting emotional self-care needs may find it helpful to limit time with people who are neither supportive nor helpful.

WHY SELF-CARE IS IMPORTANT
Sometimes people attempt to meet the needs of family members, employers, children, friends, or society in general before meeting their own needs, and working to please and care for others often interferes with one’s self-care routine and can take a toll on a person’s well-being.

People who have dependent personalities or experience depression, codependency, or anxiety may also fail to meet their self-care needs. However, self-care is often considered to be an important aspect of resiliency: those who are able to adequately meet their needs are often able to better cope with everyday stressors.

Because people who are able to meet their own physical and emotional needs are typically better equipped to care for others, it may be especially important for parents of children with behavioral challenges or other special needs to maintain a self-care routine.

Fatigue, stress, anxiety, and worry may have a significant effect on well-being, but attending to physical and emotional needs may help prevent or reduce the effects of these issues, foster self-compassion, and leave parents more able to meet the needs of their child.

Self-care behaviors may also help mental health professionals and other health care providers avoid compassion fatigue, which can often result from work in a high-stress or traumatic environment and may lead to self-doubt, self-blame, and ethical or legal complications.

Individuals in a transition phase or those who are facing changing circumstances may neglect self-care. 

Self-care skills may also lead to resiliency that continues to have a positive effect throughout life.

HOW THERAPY CAN HELP WITH SELF-CARE
Therapy can often uncover the root of a failure to care for one’s self. If depression is the cause, therapy can typically help relieve symptoms of depression and improve one’s mood, which will generally lead to one becoming able to meet self-care needs once again.

Here are some ideas for self-care:

1. Simplify your schedule.

Are you over-committed? Are there things that you need to let go? Ask yourself which activities and relationships are truly adding value to your life, and intentionally make space for those things.

2. Do something that energizes your body.

Stretch, swim, run, do yoga, or whatever physical activity you enjoy. Exercise is a key part of self-care.

3. Take a long, warm bath.

While you’re at it, light a candle, read a magazine, listen to soothing music.

4. Create a Gratitude List.

Write down all the things that you’re thankful for.

5. Meet with a counselor.

This could be a psychologist, therapist, or spiritual mentor.

6. Unplug for a day.

Go on a media and technology fast, and turn off any unnecessary electronic devices.

7. Stretch.

Find the kinks and tension spots in you body, and stretch them out.

8. Do something new.

Have you been considering learning a new skill or trying a new hobby? Go for it.

9. Practice mini-meditation.

Begin or end your day with a minute of deep breathing, and focused awareness of your body, thoughts, and feelings.

10. Dance it out.

Put on your favorite dance music, and shake your body.

11. Write or journal your thoughts.

Take 10 minutes, and jot down whatever is on your mind. Mentally release those things as you write.

12. Get quality time with a quality person.

Hang out with someone who you love. If they’re far away, give them a phone call.

13. Be still.

Find a quiet place outside, and embrace the stillness.

14. Practice a full day of Sabbath rest.

Take a full day to rest and rejuvenate.

15. De-clutter.

Choose a place — your email inbox, your desk, a closet — and get rid of the excess and junk.

16. Do an activity mindfully and slowly.

Savor the moment, and experience your activity with attentiveness.

17. Take a walk.

Explore your area at a leisurely pace.

18. Reflect on your personal mission statement.

If you don’t have a personal mission statement, create one.

19. Enjoy a piece of chocolate or a glass of wine.

Better yet, enjoy both together.

20. Sleep.

Take a nap, go to bed earlier, give your body some extra rest.

3. Walnuts

Walnuts have many characteristics that make them an excellent food for healthy skin.

They’re a good source of essential fatty acids, which are fats that your body cannot make itself.

In fact, they’re richer than most other nuts in both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

A diet too high in omega-6 fats may promote inflammation, including inflammatory conditions of your skin like psoriasis.

On the other hand, omega-3 fats reduce inflammation in your body — including in your skin.

While omega-6 fatty acids are plentiful in the Western diet, sources of omega-3 fatty acids are rare.

Because walnuts contain a good ratio of these fatty acids, they may help fight the potential inflammatory response to excessive omega-6.

What’s more, walnuts contain other nutrients that your skin needs to function properly and stay healthy.

28 grams of walnuts contains 8% of the DV for zinc.

Zinc is essential for your skin to function properly as a barrier. It’s also necessary for wound healing and combating both bacteria and inflammation.

Walnuts also provide small amounts of the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium, in addition to 4–5 grams of protein per 28 grams.

Summary
Walnuts are a good source of essential fats, zinc, vitamin E, selenium and protein — all of which are nutrients your skin needs to stay healthy.

Ingeneral, nuts and seeds are good sources of skin-boosting nutrients. Sunflower seeds are an excellent example.

One ounce (28 grams) of sunflower seeds packs 49% of the DV for vitamin E, 41% of the DV for selenium, 14% of the DV for zinc, and 5.5 grams of protein.

5. Sweet potatoes

Beta carotene is a nutrient found in plants. It functions as provitamin A, which means it can be converted into vitamin A in your body.

Beta carotene is found in oranges and vegetables such as carrots, spinach, and sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source — one 1/2-cup (100-gram) serving of baked sweet potato contains enough beta carotene to provide more than six times the DV of vitamin  A.

Carotenoids like beta carotene help keep your skin healthy by acting as a natural sunblock.

When consumed, this antioxidant is incorporated into your skin and helps protect your skin cells from sun exposure. This may help prevent sunburn, cell death, and dry, wrinkled skin.

Interestingly, high amounts of beta carotene may also add a warm, orange color to your skin, contributing to an overall healthier appearance.

6. Red or yellow bell peppers

Like sweet potatoes, bell peppers are an excellent source of beta carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A.

One cup of chopped red bell pepper contains the equivalent of 156% of the DV for vitamin A.

They’re also one of the best sources of vitamin C. This vitamin is necessary for creating the protein collagen, which keeps skin firm and strong.

A single cup of bell pepper provides an impressive 211% of the DV for vitamin C.

A large observational study involving women linked eating plenty of vitamin C to a reduced risk of wrinkled and dry skin with age.

Bell peppers contain plenty of beta carotene and vitamin C — both of which are important antioxidants for your skin. Vitamin C is also necessary to create collagen, the structural protein that keeps your skin strong.

7. Broccoli

Broccoli is full of many vitamins and minerals important for skin health, including zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

It also contains lutein, a carotenoid that works like beta carotene. Lutein helps protect your skin from oxidative damage, which can cause your skin to become dry and wrinkled.

But broccoli florets also pack a special compound called sulforaphane, which boasts some impressive potential benefits. It may even have anti-cancer effects, including on some types of skin cancer.

Sulforaphane is likewise a powerful protective agent against sun damage. It works in two ways: neutralizing harmful free radicals and switching on other protective systems in your body.

In laboratory tests, sulforaphane reduced the number of skin cells UV light killed by as much as 29%, with protection lasting up to 48 hours.

Evidence suggests sulforaphane may also help maintain collagen levels in your skin.

8. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C and contain all of the major carotenoids, including lycopene.

Because tomatoes are rich in carotenoids, they’re an excellent food for maintaining healthy skin.

Consider pairing carotenoid-rich foods like tomatoes with a source of fat, such as cheese or olive oil. Fat increases your absorption of carotenoids.

In postmenopausal women, soy may also improve skin dryness and increase collagen, which helps keep your skin smooth and strong.

These isoflavones not only help to protect the cells inside your body from damage but also your skin from UV radiation — which may reduce the risk of some skin cancers.

10. Dark chocolate

If you need one more reason to eat chocolate, here it is: The effects of cocoa on your skin are pretty phenomenal.

After 6–12 weeks of consuming a cocoa powder high in antioxidants each day, participants in one study experienced thicker, more hydrated skin.

Their skin was also less rough and scaly, less sensitive to sunburn, and had better blood flow — which brings more nutrients to your skin.

Another study found that eating 20 grams of high-antioxidant dark chocolate per day could allow your skin to withstand over twice as much UV radiation before burning, compared with eating low-antioxidant chocolate.

Several other studies have observed similar results, including improvements in the appearance of wrinkles. However, keep in mind that at least one study didn’t find significant effects.

Make sure to choose dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa to maximize the benefits and keep added sugar to a minimum.

11. Green tea

One 12-week study involving 60 women found that drinking green tea daily could reduce redness from sun exposure by up to 25%.

Green tea also improved the moisture, roughness, thickness, and elasticity of their skin.

While green tea is a great choice for healthy skin, you may want to avoid drinking your tea with milk, as there’s evidence that milk could reduce the effect of green tea’s antioxidants.

The catechins found in green tea are powerful antioxidants that can protect your skin against sun damage and reduce redness, as well as improve its hydration, thickness and elasticity.

12. Red grapes

Red grapes are famous for containing resveratrol, a compound that comes from the skin of red grapes.

Resveratrol is credited with a wide range of health benefits, among them is reducing the effects of aging.

Test-tube studies suggest it may also help slow the production of harmful free radicals, which damage skin cells and cause signs of aging.

This beneficial compound is also found in red wine. Unfortunately, there’s not much evidence that the amount of resveratrol you get from a glass of red wine is enough to affect your skin.

And since red wine is an alcoholic beverage, there are negative effects to drinking it in excess.

It’s not recommended to start drinking red wine just because of its potential health benefits. Instead, you should increase your intake of red grapes and berries.

Summary
Resveratrol, the famous antioxidant found in red grapes, may slow your skin’s aging process by impairing harmful free radicals that damage your skin.

What you eat can significantly affect your skin health.
